What ingredients do I need to make ciambelline al vino rosso?

Let’s delve into the ciambelline al vino rosso ingredients. These ingredients come together to form a unique and flavorful cookie, rich in tradition and regional authenticity.

  1. Red Wine: The star of the show, red wine imparts a distinct flavour and character to Ciambelline al Vino Rosso. Choose a robust and fruity variety, such as Chianti or Sangiovese, to infuse the cookies with the rich undertones of the vineyard. The wine not only adds taste but also contributes to the cookies’ unique texture;
  2. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: In place of butter, Ciambelline al Vino Rosso use extra virgin olive oil. This not only provides a delightful Mediterranean twist but also adds a velvety texture to the cookies. Opt for a high-quality olive oil to enhance the overall taste and ensure a rich, moist consistency;
  3. All-Purpose Flour: All-purpose flour serves as the base, providing the structure and texture for the cookies. It is a versatile choice that strikes a balance between a tender crumb and a slightly chewy bite and one of the most important dry ingredients;
  4. Granulated Sugar: A moderate amount of granulated sugar sweetens the Ciambelline al Vino Rosso. The sugar not only adds sweetness but also contributes to the cookies’ texture and helps with browning during baking;
  5. Baking Powder: Baking powder acts as the leavening agent, giving the cookies a light and airy consistency. It helps create a delicate crumb that complements the rich flavours of red wine and olive oil;
  6. Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a warm and aromatic spice that can add a delightful complexity to the flavour profile of Ciambelline al Vino Rosso. While Anise seeds are the traditional choice when it comes to these ciambelline al vino rosso, if used in moderation, cinnamon introduces sweet and woody notes that can complement the fruity undertones of the red wine and the richness of the olive oil. It can bring a comforting warmth to the cookies, creating a harmonious balance with the other ingredients;
  7. Salt: Salt plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall flavour profile of baked goods. Salt helps balance sweetness, intensifies flavours, and adds a subtle savoury undertone that can enhance the richness of the cookie.

These simple ingredients come together to make Ciambelline al Vino Rosso, a tasty little nod to Lazio’s food traditions. As you get everything ready and start baking, you’re not just making cookies, you’re sharing a bit of Italian comfort and the kind of treat that’s perfect for enjoying with the people you love.

How do I make this ciambelline al vino rosso recipe easy?

These red wine cookies take minutes to put together, so let’s get into this ciambelline recipe!

Start by preheating the oven to 190C, then cover a baking tray with a baking sheet and set aside. The dough comes together quickly and needs no rest time, so it’s ideal to be as prepared as you possibly can.

In a large bowl place the dry ingredients first : all purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and sugar and combine, then add the extra virgin olive oil and red wine and knead the dough quickly until it comes together. Do not over-do this step and you only need a smooth dough, nothing major and no gluten to be developed.

Time to shape: roll a small bit of dough to form a long roll, then cut into strips and form the cookies like a small doughnut. Dip one side of the doughnut in the white sugar and place on the baking tray with parchment paper.

At last, bake for 15-20 minutes, then let them cool down completely before serving. I was told these go extremely well dunked in – you might have guessed it! – a glass of red wine! if you still have some leftover, keep them in an air tight container for later.
