There is nothing we love more than strawberries in our house, I mean, I guess they do come to a close tie with pistachios, but you can have two favourites, right? This delicious homemade strawberry liqueur is the perfect drink to offer all summer long when you have guests, or just a good excuse to enjoy it in the evening while looking at the sunset (I know, aren’t we romantic over here?)

Whether you are up for romance or not, this strawberry liqueur is so easy to make, and the only downside of the recipe is that you have to wait for it to infuse, but I guess two days are not that long for the exquisite stuff you are left with after!

What is strawberry liqueur?

Strawberry liqueur is a homemade sweet alcoholic beverage made by infusing strawberries with sugar and alcohol, in this case vodka.

It’s perfect as a little treat after dinner or to share with guests, and most of all, an amazing way to keep that strawberry flavour for longer. What is amazing about this recipe is that its perfect to make strawberry liqueur cocktails and strawberry liqueur creme.

Are strawberries good for you?

Strawberries are not actually regular fruits per se, shocker I know! They are aggregate fruits, which means that the small seeds on the outside of the strawberries, called achene, are the ovaries of this ‘fruit’, which contain the seeds. So after a horticultural lesson, let’s get to the interesting part, what are strawberries good for:

  • they are a source of vitamin C and manganese;
  • they contain potassium and folate;
  • benefits for heart health and blood sugar control;
  • they are rich in antioxidants and plant compounds;
  • they can help improve vascular function;
  • they can help reduce inflammation and prevent cancer. (Healthline)

What ingredients are needed to make the best strawberry liqueur?

This strawberry liqueur only requires three simple ingredients:

  • fresh strawberries – they provide the flavour, aroma and colour to this liqueur recipe;
  • granulated sugar – helps extract the juices from the strawberries during the maceration process and will help balance the vodka;
  • vodka – neutral alcohol that will help preserve the fruit flavour for longer than the summer season.

How do I make strawberry liqueur?

You will start by preparing the strawberries. Wash them thoroughly, cut off the calyx (the green leafy stuff on top) and cut them into 6/8 chunks. Then set them aside.

Sterilise a 1-litre jar or an airtight container (to sterilise, clean them thoroughly and then boil them for 10-15 minutes, or you can do it in the oven. Just make sure your container is heatproof).

Add the sugar, chopped strawberries and vodka to the jar. Seal it and shake it well until the sugar is dissolved. Then place it in a cool, dark place (a cabinet can work well). Give it a shake 3/4 times a day, so that the sugar won’t settle at the bottom.

After 48 hours, you can strain the liquid to remove the fruit and transfer the liquor into a clean, sterilised bottle. You can refrigerate it up to a year and enjoy your strawberry liqueur!
(you can also store it in a dark place, but with changing temperatures, the liqueur quality might change).

Do you have any other liqueur recipes on the blog?

We do indeed! And they are some of our readers’ favourite liqueurs:

  • limoncello cream – think limoncello and dairy had a kid, rich, velvety and perfect to enjoy fresh on a summer afternoon or as digestif;
  • almond cream liqueur – almond cream and dairy had a child, and this is the essence of everything sicily and almonds;
  • lavender liqueur – this is from our sister blog, and there’s nothing more fresh and floral than this drink;
  • spiced vodka liqueur – still from our sister blog, this is the perfect Christmas spiced flavour you need to get through a social gathering (LOL).
